Spotlight On: Physical Therapy

At Ohio Living, our mission-focused teams bring strong expertise in many areas to best serve residents, patients and their families across the full continuum of care.

This month, we’re spotlighting several applications and benefits of physical therapy.

 Why choose physical therapy?

In every season of life, physical therapy can play a key role in recovery from an injury or health condition. While approaches and applications may vary, the goal of physical therapy is to reduce pain and restore function.

Often, physical therapy is used in conjunction with medications or Osteopathic/Chiropractic manipulative therapy. In recent months, we’ve also seen an increased application of physical therapy being used to aid those recovering from COVID-19. Physical therapy can provide comfort and relief to those experiencing mobility issues, continued aches or pains, muscle weakness or even limited physical ability due to hospitalization.

What types of therapy offerings does Ohio Living provide?

Physical therapy services are offered in home health care, outpatient and short-term rehabilitation environments. Our experienced and licensed physical therapists provide personal, customized care plans for each patient. Whether it’s rehabbing after knee, hip or shoulder surgery, recovering from a stroke or other situations where therapy is necessary, we can help.

Our physical therapy team focuses on restoring balance, improving functional mobility, pain management techniques, cardiovascular rehab, addressing neuromuscular deficits, lymphedema management, maintaining skin integrity, patient and caregiver education and reducing the risk of falling.

Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice locations offer Fall Prevention programs that address all factors contributing to falls, including but not limited to:

  • Assessing and adapting the home environment
  • Core stabilization
  • Addressing mal-alignment deficits
  • Visual and vestibular rehab training
  • Dynamic balance exercises
  • Proper durable medical equipment (DME) recommendations
  • Addressing pelvic floor musculature to reduce incontinence
  • Medication management

In addition, our skilled locations offer both land and aquatic therapy. Notably, Ohio Living Dorothy Love hosts the area's only HydroWorx2000 pool in the Miami region. The HydroWorx2000 offers an adjustable floor and variable water depth, an underwater treadmill and support bar. Aquatic therapy is offered in a low-impact environment that provides less joint strain for patients than land-based programs. Our inpatient rehab team focuses on gaining and maintaining mobility.

At Ohio Living, we also provide outpatient therapy services that are perfect for the final phase of your rehab journey to return to and/or exceed your prior level of function. Outpatient therapy is perfect for post-op orthopedic patients and helps with increasing range of motion, building strength and restoring function. We provide various modalities to manage pain, including but not limited to:

  • Electrical stimulation
  • Ultrasound
  • Heat/cold modalities
  • Infrared
  • Traction
  • Manual techniques
