Bringing Connection, One Costume at a Time

If you have ever spotted Swanny at happy hour, Snowflake tucked into an unexpected corner or Tom the Turkey chatting with residents, you have seen Jessica at work.

Jessica, a member of the Ohio Living Swan Creek sales and marketing team, uses these alter egos to spark connection across campus. “I grew up performing and dancing competitively for 15 years,” she shared. “I’ve always loved dressing up, and I love making people laugh.”

Three people gather in a community space beside a festive turkey decoration, smiling for the camera. The image captures a fun seasonal celebration that brings residents and team members together through shared activities and community spirit.
That energy found a new outlet through a challenge from her supervisor, Sarah, to strengthen the community’s social media engagement.

“I started by doing interviews with residents in a turkey costume,” Jessica said. “What began as a fun idea quickly gained attention, and I ran with it.”

Not long after, Snowflake made an appearance. Inspired by Elf on the Shelf, Jessica brought the idea to life for residents. “I would pop up in different places, and residents would find me,” she said. “They loved the mischief, especially during Christmas in July.” Each year, she builds on the idea. “I always try to top the year before.”

The creativity did not stop there. With support from the campus sewing guild, Swanny was brought to life as a community mascot, lovingly named by residents and staff. Now a familiar face at events and gatherings, Swanny has grown into something of a local celebrity.

“Residents love her, and sometimes Swanny and Snowflake even team up,” Jessica explained.

While these characters have driven strong engagement online and even earned recognition for creativity from Ohio Living’s corporate team, Jessica’s motivation is simple. “Many of our residents are facing challenges we do not always see,” she said. “They are strong people. If I can bring joy, I want to do that.”

Jessica’s connection to the community runs deep. She first worked at Ohio Living Swan Creek during college before beginning her professional career. She returned several years ago and found her place once again.
Now often one of the first people new residents meet, Jessica brings warmth to every interaction. “You have to have a passion for seniors, and I do,” she said.
