Intergenerational Housing Program Launches at Ohio Living Swan Creek

When Josie Petersen, a sophomore at the University of Toledo, began her social work studies, she never imagined that part of her college experience would include living among older adults. This summer, she became the first participant in a new intergenerational housing program at Ohio Living Swan Creek, designed to connect students and residents in meaningful ways.

Josie learned about the program during her internship at MemoryLane Care Services, a Toledo area day facility for older adults with dementia.sarah (6 of 10)

“When the opportunity was presented to me, I thought it sounded so unique,” explained Josie. “I was living at home at the time, and I wanted to open myself up to new experiences that would help me build my future career.”

Now living full-time at Ohio Living Swan Creek, Josie enjoys her own apartment within the independent living area. Between classes and activities, she makes time to join residents for meals and community events. She even added a bit of extra joy to her life recently with a new pet kitten named Milo.

“I wanted to gain more knowledge about working with older adults by living and interacting with them daily,” Josie elaborated. “The most surprising thing about my experience here is the willingness of residents to take time to share their knowledge with me. There are so many people here from all different walks of life. Anytime I sit down with someone, they go out of their way to give advice about school, a future job, family…or life in general. It’s something I’ve really enjoyed.”

Living at Ohio Living Swan Creek has also given Josie valuable insight into the aging process and the inner workings of a senior living community.

It’s made me realize that I might want to work in this type of setting someday.”

Ohio Living Swan Creek Marketing Director Sarah Schnurr had been searching for the ideal student to join the intergenerational housing program. The moment she met Josie, she knew she was a perfect fit.

“During her interview and tour of the facility, Josie made a point to connect with every resident and staff member she passed,” shared Sarah. “She even volunteered to help with a campus photo shoot on her own time. One of my favorite moments was seeing her waiting with the residents, ready to hop on the bus for an ice cream outing!”

When she’s not studying or participating in activities, Josie loves being outdoors and spending time in nature. She also enjoys using her talents as a licensed nail technician to treat residents to a bit of self-care.

“I’d like to thank all the staff who helped make this program possible and the residents who opened their community to me,” emphasized Josie. “Everyone has been so kind and accepting. I’m looking forward to seeing where this experience takes me in the future.”
